Jobs Back on the Job for the Day
Apple unveiled its iPad 2 today, so add another, or at least another version of an, electronic that I roll my eyes at on the bus but secretly covet. This one has a camera on the front, a camera on the back and can even make you dinner. OK, I might be elaborating. Also, Steve Jobs, who is on indefinite sick leave from running to company was on stage – naturally clad in his black turtleneck and dad jeans – to talk about the arrival of the product that starts at $499. FYI, my birthday is in July. More.

Warm Your Cold Heart
While there have been tons of reports about the recovery of Congresswoman Gabrielle Giffords following the massacre in Tucson, I love this story about Ron Barber. Barber, Giffords’ aide and long-time friend of Judge John Roll, was shot in the face and in the leg. This story chronicles his recovery and his grace in considering the tragedy. I was seriously choked up by the end.

Victory for Even Awful Free Speech
You know those Crazy McCrazies that protest at the funerals of those who defend our rights, such as our right to free speech? You know the ones that have the signs that say “God Hates America” among other things. Well, the U.S. just upheld their right to do so. On Wednesday, the Supreme Court rejected an appeal from the father of a marine who was killed in Iraq. An earlier court case had awarded Albert Snyder $5 million in damages for his emotional distress. Westboro Baptist appealed and the Supreme Court rejected Snyder’s appeal. So, now the Crazies can continue to spill their vile. It is a big pill to swallow, but as a reporter I believe they made the right decision in protecting (even horrible, hate-filled) free speech. Also, since Snyder’s son’s funeral, several states have instituted laws that bar protesters from picketing in the immediate vicinity.

While it might be a bit uncouth for funerals, I still think this is our best defense against Westboro.

Presidential Pundits
Living up to its utmost journalistic integrity, Fox News has suspended its contracts with former speaker of the House Newt Gingrich and former Pennsylvania senator Rick Santorum, because both are emerging as possible presidential candidates. It would be bad business for a presidential candidate to play pundit, so it was the right thing to do. Surprisingly, Sarah Palin’s contract is around. More.
Jon Stewart had a funny take on this yesterday. Watch here. He starts talking about it at 2:21.
Also, every time I think of Santorum, I think of columnist Dan Savage’s, um, smear campaign, to name something disgusting “santorum.” Boy, did he succeed. It is the top search result for “Santorum.” If you’re curious, google it, unless you are my parents or my parents’ age. In that case, do not. I repeat, do not. I am not tempting you. You might puke or have to pop an aspirin. DON'T.
